If all you’re interested in is where to purchase a cheap laptop you need look no further than your local Wal-Mart or BestBuy. But I think what most people don’t realize is just how limited their selection will be and how under powered some of those units are.

I think a better option is Amazon. They have hundereds of laptops and netbooks at great prices all in one place. You can also read customer reviews and get the opinions of others who have already bought and used the notebook you are intersted in.

Also you should consider that if you just go out and get the lowest price that you can find you may get that laptop computer home and find out that it dosen’t have enough memory or processer power to do the job that you want it to do.

Some times cheap is just that.  You need to be sure that the computer you get has enough memory and that the CPU is up to the job you intend to use it for. If you end up having to ad more memory later that cheap laptop is going to start getting pretty expensive.

A friend of mine bought a notebook and soon found out that it was way to slow and ended up having to spend over $120 to get the memory he needed. Usually it would not have been that much but the manufacturer had used 2 500 MB chips instead of 1 1 GB chip so he had to replace both to upgrade.

When buying a laptop maybe you should think more in terms of value than cheap. You can get that plus a lot more at Amazon.

Laptops have become the personal secretary for most professionals and students and most of us want to have the best. The saying is that “ The best products comes from best producers ”.  

If companies are going to stand out in the market they need to produce quality products and only if they produce products of high quality can they withstand the competitive environment and sustain their presence at the top.

There are many laptop producers (small and big), but the ones surviving in this market are the ones whose customers trust in their products and companies. TOSHIBA, APPLE, HP, ASUS, LENOVA, DELL, SONY and ACER  are some of the best Laptop producers in the market today and have gained that trust through their quality.

As far as who makes the best laptop that’s hard to pin down. The  Apple MacBook Pro is a great laptop but it is quite expensive at around $1200. ASUS has the Eee PC series which are awesome but if you are looking for a full size laptop they don’t fit the bill. Toshiba has perhaps the best balance of quality, features and price with their Satellite series.

My wife Pat has a Toshiba Satellite and I have a Compaq Presario which is made by HP. We like them both and have had no problems with either of them.

As with many things when dealing with “the best” if you ask 5 people the question “Who makes the best laptop?” you will probably get 5 different answers. All of the brands above make quality computers so you will just have to decide for yourself which one YOU think is the best.

It seems that these days the distinction between laptop and netbook no longer exists. If you don’t know the difference is basically that a laptop or notebook has a CD or DVD drive and a netbook dose not. Today though everything is being called a laptop.

Having said that the smallest laptop is made by UMID and is called the mbook. It has a 4.8 inch touchscreen with 1024 x 600 resolution, 1.1GHz or 1.3GHz Intel Atom processor and 1GB of memory, but the Flash-based storage provided ranges between 8GB and 32GB.

It also has Wi-Fi 802.11b/g, 3G and Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity. With a Mini-USB 2.0, Micro SD slot and Mobile sim-card slot it’s versatile as well. The battery life is an impressive 6 hours.

There are other laptop/netbooks out there that are a little larger but still small enough to be ultra portable and easier to use and view. Asus makes several with 7″ screens, the Sony VAIO Lifestyle series has an 8″ screen and Acer, HP and ASUS all have several models with 8.9″ screens.

There you have it the UMID mbook is the smallest laptop made today although it probably is not the best if you are looking for an ultra small laptop.

When you are choosing a laptop it is very important to make sure that you get one that suits your needs. Contrary to popular belief, you will find that all laptops are not created equal, and there is literally a notebook out there for just about any application that you can possibly imagine. Some things that you might use a laptop for are word processing, 3D modeling and animation, gaming, internet, and many other things. Below are a list of things you might use it for, and things that you will want to look for in the laptop of your dreams.

Gaming: Laptop gaming and portable gaming in general is getting very popular, and if you want to game there are a few things that you are going to need to look for. You need to make sure the laptop has plenty of RAM. 4 GB should be the desire range, though a little less won’t hurt much.

 You want to make sure it has a large hard drive because games take up a lot of space. You’ll want to see what type of graphics card it has. Remember you cannot upgrade the graphics card in a laptop so you are stuck with whatever happens to be in there when you find it. Typically an integrated card will not be enough, you will want to make sure that it has a brand name card like nVidia or ATI. Remember one thing, when it comes to video cards they are numbered, The first number is the generation, the second number is the class, the last two numbers are the version. The second number is important because it tells you what the card is best used for, whether it’s good for office work, or for gaming. The higher the number, the more powerful the card. Finally you want to make sure that the laptop cools well because laptops tend to get very hot during gaming. In any case you are probably going to need to purchase a cooling pad.

Word Processing: For this application you won’t need much graphics power, but if you are a writer you will want to make sure that you have at least 2 GB of ram. The reason for this is because more RAM allows more programs to be open at once, and chances are you are going to have a lot of different documents open at once. The hard drive does not have to be huge because text documents aren’t that large, and it probably will not get very hot, so this isn’t something that you have to worry about.

3D Modeling: This is something that takes up a lot of resources, so if you are going to be doing it then you’ll want to go for the best laptop that you possibly can, maybe even one that’s better than if you were gaming. 3D model files are huge, the laptop will overheat, and you’ll want to make sure it is equipped with the best cooling pad that you can possibly get.

Internet: Surfing the internet requires a lot more resources today than it did five years ago. You’re going to need quite a bit of ram because at some point you’re going to want to instant message and maybe even open multiple web browsers. You won’t need a high capacity hard drive though, so that’s nothing to worry about.
